About the Author

Carrie Hope Fletcher (born 22 October 1992) is an English singer, songwriter, actress (primarily in musical theatre), author and vlogger from Harrow.

As a child, Fletcher played small roles on television and appeared in musical theatre in London's West End. In 2011, she started a YouTube channel called Carrie Hope Fletcher (formerly ItsWayPastMyBedTime), which features music and vlogs. As of November 2017, she has over 651,000 subscribers.

Fletcher played Éponine in Les Misérables in the West End until 13 February 2016. In 2015 she published a book called: All I Know Now: Wonderings and Reflections on Growing Up Gracefully, which was a Number 1 bestseller in the UK. Her debut novel On the Other Side was released on 14 July 2016. Her second novel All That She Can See was released on the 13th July 2017.

Plot

Opinions

Having really enjoyed Carrie's previous novel, On the Other Side (click here to read my review), I was really excited for All She Can See, but for various reasons, I never got around to picking it up at the time of its release. But, at the start of 2018, I popped into my local Waterstones' as they were having a sale. I ended up paying £3.98 for two hardbacks as I had a ten-pound discount card. I read it at the start of 2018 and I really enjoyed it. I ended up giving it 4/5 stars. 

Carrie's writing style is really beautiful and whimsical, it's one of my favourite aspects of the books of hers that I have read. I've not read many authors who have quite the same whimsical style as Carrie. I think the reason I enjoy it is that I love the descriptive elements, I've always been a bit of a sucker for a beautiful descriptive passage.

The story had a really unique concept, I've never read anything where a character can control emotions through baking. I just had a really good time while I was reading it. The characters were well developed and the plot twists were really well done, I didn't see any of them coming. The portrayal of anxiety was done beautifully and didn't feel like it was included in there to tick off a box.

My only complaint is that the romance was somewhat predictable. Even before the book started, I knew the main characters were going to fall in love. It was the typical "I hate you, no I love you" relationship. This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5.

I am so excited for Carrie's next novel, When the Curtain Falls, and I will 100% be pre-ordering it and if she goes on tour, I will try and meet her.

In this Book Review Monday I am going to be reviewing the wonderful On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher. I was lucky enough to get to meet Carrie at one of her book events this year. I was so glad I did as it meant reading this book was so much more special. Like my last review, there will be specific structure which is: Non-Spoiler section, cover review, plot overview, character chat and opinions.

Non-Spoiler Thoughts

I rated On the Other Side 5/5 stars. My opinion of this book is probably a bit biased as did meet Carrie and I think that made this book a bit more special for me. Usually, I am not a big fan of love stories as they are usually all the same, but this was something that I hadn't read before. I would recommend you read it even if you don't watch Carrie's videos.

Cover Review

I really  liked the cover as the images on it had something to do with the book. I loved the use of purple foil which made these images pop. It is one of the prettiest books I own and I know we're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but this cover is too pretty not to judge. I also love how the tree looks like a heart which ties in nicely with the tag line for this book, a love story like no other.

I've decided for this review that I'm not going to go into details about the plot and that I'm going to take a quote from Goodreads. I'm not sure if I like doing these parts of my reviews and I'm debating not doing them in future reviews. Let me know what you think.

Character Chat

I am going to talk about 3 characters from the book and they are Evie Snow, Vincent Winters and Jim Summer.

Evie Snow- Evie was the protagonist in this book and I have to say that I really liked her. There were defiantly a lot of similarities between Carrie and Evie, but Carrie said that was because she wanted a character she could relate to a lot in physical appearances and personality traits. Evie was a very family orientated character, she would do anything for her brother Eddie which was something I admired about her.  She was also very independent, going against what her mother wants her to and making her own decisions. I thought that Evie was a brave and very selfless character as her decision to marry Jim to protect her brother over her own love for Vincent showed she really loved her brother. It broke my heart reading this as I wanted Evie to be happy and she chose to protect someone over her own feelings. I also loved how she stood up to the people she worked with as they were very sexist and she defied there wants.

Vincent Winters- Vincent was one of two love interests in Evie's life. I loved how he was talented at an unusual instrument like the violin. He was such a sweet character and you could really tell that he loved Evie. It was very obvious how Vincent was based on Pete (Carrie's boyfriend) and I thought that this was a really nice touch. I felt so sorry for Vincent when Evie chose Jim instead, like my heart broke. But I loved how understanding he was. I was so grateful that he didn't lash out at Evie about her decision and he was just so accepting. I really liked how he got to meat Evie in the after life.

Jim Summer- Jim was the other love interest in Evie's life, but unlike Vincent, Evie didn't love him back at first. I wasn't sure if I liked Jim, but he did grow on me. I liked how he was a childhood friend of Evie's.  I was so happy that Jim stood up to Evie's mother and told her what she was doing was wrong. That was what made me like him. I was happy that he supported Evie's decision.

Opinions    

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice and fun book to read. I love the representation of LGBT in this book. We have 3 characters who have connections to the LGBT community, we have a gay character, a bi character and a pan-sexual character. I've never read a book with a pan-sexual character in it before.

One thing that I wasn't too keen on/ I didn't really notice it, was the magical elements in the story. Whenever one of these moments happened, it washed over me and I would have to go back an re-read it. Also, these moments only happened to Evie. I wish they had happened to more characters to make the magic seem more balanced and not just added as a special effect.

Overall I really enjoyed On the Other Side and I can't wait to read more books by Carrie and see what style she tries next.

Top 10 Authors| It'sCarenzaB

Today I thought I'd share with you my Top 10 favourite authors as I find these types of post really interesting. These authors are my current favourites and at some point this will change. I have ranked these authors backwards, so it will start at 10 and finish at 1, I hope you like this post!

10) Jenifer Niven

The reason I put Jenifer Niven on this list was because I really enjoyed her book All The Bright Places. Yes, the book has some huge flaws and doesn't portray mental health how it actually is, but this book does make people aware about mental health. I read All The Bright Places in July 2015 and really enjoyed it. It was a nice fun read and it does make you care about the main characters.

9) Victoria Schwab (also known as VE Schwab)

I'll be honest, I've only read one VE Schwab book, but it was such a good book! Victoria Schwab writes about such unusual ideas and comes up with such amazing characters, it's impossible not to fall in love with her writing style. Also she throws in plot twists that no one sees coming. I really want to read more from her, especially the Darker Shade of Magic series as I have heard nothing but good reviews about it.

8) Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan makes it on to the list for his Percy Jackson series, which I am currently marathoning. Having read the first book about 2 years ago, I was eager to continue with the series, but it wasn't until December 2015 that I bought the rest of the books. I'm currently reading the thrid book and really enjoying it. Though these books are aimed at people younger than myself, they do actually teach you about Greek Mythology and I have learned quite a bit from these books.

7) Maggie Stievfater

I have put Maggie Stievfater on here for her Raven Cycle series as I really liked it. I have only read the first two books, but I can't wait to read the thrid one as it focuses on my favourite character Blue. A few years ago, I did try to read The Wolves of Mercy Fall  but ended up giving up, but now I am more determined to go and read more of her books. Once I've finished the Raven Cycle, I do plan on doing a series review on here.

6) Carrie Hope Fletcher

Having watched Carrie's YouTube channel for around 3 years, I knew I would love her books. I haven't read her most recent one as I am meeting her at a book signing and I get my copy then.  In her other book, All I Know Now, she writes like she's having a conversation with you and I really liked that. She gave you small insights into her own life and made each story relavent to the topic of the chapter.

5) John Green

We are now into the top 5!

John Green had to feature on this list, as his books were some of the first contempary books I have read. My favourites are defintly The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska. Although his books are somewhat similar, they all have their own unique twists. I hope in the future he writes more books as I would love to read something new from him.

4) Ransom Riggs

Again, another author that had to feature on this list. I read the first book in the Miss Peregrines series in a very short amount of time in February and I loved it. I am so glad that it is going to be turned into a film as it is being directed by Tim Burton. The use of old photographs does add something to the stories, though sometimes it does feel like he is adding photos which have no relavence to the actual plot. I haven't finised this series, I actually decided to put down the third book because I wasn't enjoying it as much as the other two.

3) Sarah J Maas

Is it any surprise that Sarah J Maas is on this list? I really love her books and have yet to find a book of hers that I don't like. I have to say that I do prefer the A Court of Thornes and Roses series to her Throne of Glass series. Her books are definitly not YA, they are more New Adult as they do have some very steamy moments (especially ACOMAF). But both series have series bad-ass heroines, which I really like. I can't wait to read Empire of Storms which comes out on September 5th. 

2) Cassandra Clare

Again, is it any surprise that Cassandra Clare is on this list? Probably not. I have been reading Cassandra Clare books for 3 years now and I love every single one she has released. My favourite series of hers is The Infernal Devices, but I do have a lot of love for her other series. Her books are so beautifully written and the characters are just beyond beautiful, I wish they were real. This year I have bought 10 Cassandra Clare books (9 of which are repurchases for the new US covers).

1) J K Rowling

Obviously, JK Rowling has to be number one on this list. Harry Potter was such a huge part of my childhood, that I couldn't not feature it on this list. Harry Potter will always be a part of my life, I read them when I was little and I fell in love. I can't even count the amount of times I have read Harry Potter or watched the movies. The books always make me happy and I will never get bored of them. They just have a huge sentimental value to me.
